La deuxième génération de la famille Niepoort, à la fin du XIXe siècle, a eu la bonne idée d'acquérir à une verrerie allemande d'Oldenburg environ 4000 bonbonnes soufflées, en verre vert foncé, de capacités variées entre 8 et 11 litres, que nous appelons aujourd'hui « demijohns ». Le fils d'Eduard Niepoort, Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, grand-père de Dirk, a donné une destination aux demijohns et a mis en bouteille les meilleurs vins de la récolte de 1931, créant ainsi le type « Garrafeira Niepoort ». Depuis l'année lointaine de 1931 jusqu'à nos jours, la maturation dans les demijohns scellés avec un bouchon en liège est surveillée attentivement, étant un rituel presque « sacré » pour les familles Niepoort et Nogueira. Garrafeira n'est pas seulement un vin, cela signifie aussi une qualité bien au-dessus des canons traditionnels. Le Porto Garrafeira est un style de Porto unique et très spécial. À la dégustation, il révèle un énorme mélange de sensations, d'arômes et de saveurs avec un équilibre parfait entre jeunesse et expérience, entre la nouveauté du fruit et la « bonne vieillesse » que seuls les longues années de vieillissement peuvent conférer.
