Quinta do Vesúvio is located in the Douro Superior, the hottest and driest of the sub-regions of the Douro demarcation with only 470mm of annual precipitation. The large scale of the property (326 hectares) and the mountainous orography result in varied orientations, predominantly north and northwest, as it is situated on the left bank (south) of the Douro River. The vineyard is arranged at varying altitudes, ranging from 110 to 500 meters above sea level. These two variables — exposure and altitude — are important characteristics of the property's terroir and, together, protect the vineyard from excessive heat. The mature vines, particularly from the Vale Da Teja section of the property, date back to the 1970s and make a vital contribution to the wines in years that present greater challenges. These vines have well-developed root systems that allow them to access the water reserves stored in the subsoil, thus providing the essential support during the hot summer months. They contribute to the incredible complexity and structure of Quinta do Vesúvio wines.
