Il nome Robustus rende omaggio al primo vino del Douro, prodotto da Dirk Niepoort, il Robustus 1990, che non è mai stato commercializzato. Dal 2004 il Robustus viene vinificato secondo i metodi usati nella produzione dei vini tradizionali. Il lungo affinamento in botte di legno antico conferisce maturità, complessità, ammorbidisce i tannini e dona al vino precisione ed equilibrio, senza perdere tutto il vigore e la freschezza aromatica.
