En el siglo IX, el ron se convirtió en una bebida de calidad y valorada. Surgieron destilerías y marcas con el apoyo de la corona española. Cuba fue la cuna del ron. Cuba también produce un ron más ligero y fresco que en otras partes del Caribe, gracias a un pedido de la Corona Española, que prefería sus bebidas espirituosas de sabor delicado. El ron Conde de Cuba se cosecha, destila, envejece y embotella en un pequeño pueblo de no más de 2.000 habitantes de la provincia de Las Tunas, en Amancio Rodríguez, en el sureste de Cuba, una tierra cuyo clima es ideal para el cultivo de la caña de azúcar 100% autóctona "medialuna".
