O arquipélago de Ogasawara, situado no Pacífico e pertencente à prefeitura de Tóquio, é composto por cerca de trinta ilhas que desfrutam de um clima semi-tropical e são conhecidas por sua beleza ambiental, reconhecida pela UNESCO. Por volta de 1830, pescadores de outras partes do Pacífico começaram a visitar e trocar mercadorias com os habitantes locais. Foi nessa época que descobriram o rum e perceberam as condições climáticas ideais para cultivar cana-de-açúcar na ilha. Hoje, a produção de cana-de-açúcar é um dos principais recursos da ilha, junto com a produção de frutas. O rum de Ogasawara teve seu início no final do século XIX, através da destilação de um produto à base de melaço. Inicialmente conhecido como "awazake" pelos habitantes locais, é considerado o rum mais antigo do Japão.
