Su nombre se inspira en los Monjes Cartujos que, desde 1598, practican una vida solitaria de oración en el Monasterio de la Cartuja, en Évora, propiedad de la Fundación Eugénio de Almeida. Como forma de revivir una de las formas tradicionales de producir vinos en la Bodega Cartuja, situada en la Quinta de Valbom, donde desde hace más de dos siglos se producen vinos de calidad, la Fundación Eugénio de Almeida presenta este vino tinto elaborado en antiguas tinajas de barro.
