Description
Impenetrable ruby black core and narrow purple rim. A hallmark of Vargellas Vinha Velha, the nose is wonderfully balanced and complete, revealing multiple layers and dimensions of the aroma as it opens in the glass. At the base a coulis of dark and dense berries, with aromas of wild fruits, cassis and black cherry. The voluptuous richness of the fruit is tempered by attractive mineral and stony notes and the discreet pungency of wild herbs and cedar wood. As the wine evolves, evocative aromas emerge, of beeswax, leather and cigar box, and unexpected resonances of an ancient instrument. The palate is supported by thick granular tannins and is full of dense black and red fruit flavor that builds to a crescendo on the finish. A wine on a majestic scale that proves, if necessary, that 2017 is an exceptional year for old vines.
