The second generation of the Niepoort family, at the end of the 19th century, had the happy idea of acquiring from a glassmaker in Oldenburg about 4000 blown glass demijohns, made of dark green glass, with capacities ranging from 8 to 11 liters, which we now call "demijohns." Eduard Niepoort's son, Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, grandfather of Dirk, assigned the demijohns and bottled the best wines from the 1931 harvest, thus creating the "Garrafeira Niepoort" type. Since the distant year of 1931 until today, the maturation in the demijohns sealed with cork stoppers is closely monitored, being an almost "sacred" ritual for the Niepoort and Nogueira families. Garrafeira is not just a wine; it also means quality far above traditional standards. Porto Garrafeira is a unique and very special style of Porto. In tasting, it reveals a huge mix of sensations, aromas, and flavors with a perfect balance between youth and experience, between the novelty of fruit and the "good old age" that only long years of aging can confer.

Dark cherry color, beginning to reveal amber tones.
Fresh and vibrant on the palate, with a beautiful balance between sweetness and acidity. Notes of delicate wild fruits and a long, smooth finish.
Slightly fruity on the nose, as a result of only 4 years in cask before being transferred to demijohns. It manifests the early stages of maturation in bottle, with notes of tobacco and delicate crystallized fruits.
