The Ogasawara archipelago, located in the Pacific and belonging to Tokyo Prefecture, is made up of about thirty islands that enjoy a semi-tropical climate and are known for their environmental beauty, recognized by UNESCO. Around 1830, fishermen from other parts of the Pacific began to visit and trade goods with the local inhabitants. It was during this time that they discovered rum and realized the ideal climatic conditions for cultivating sugarcane on the island. Today, sugarcane production is one of the main resources of the island, along with fruit production. The rum of Ogasawara began in the late 19th century, through the distillation of a molasses-based product. Initially known as "awazake" by the local inhabitants, it is considered the oldest rum in Japan.
