Die Geschichte dieses Portweins reicht bis zur Ernte von 1867 in der Quinta das Carvalhas zurück, einem der prominentesten Anwesen im Alto Douro, das sich durch seine Schönheit und die Spektakularität seiner Weinberge in der duriense Landschaft auszeichnet. Es handelt sich wahrhaftig um eine verborgene lebendige Erinnerung des 19. Jahrhunderts, die mit akribischer Sorgfalt und fast religiöser Hingabe im Laufe der Zeit bewahrt wurde, zunächst in den Kellern der renommierten Firma Miguel Souza Guedes und später, Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts, durch die Eingliederung dieses Unternehmens, das in die Obhut der nachfolgenden Generationen von Kellermeistern der Real Companhia Velha übergeben wurde. Dieser Portwein setzte seine lange und geduldige Reifung in den prächtigen Kellern von Vila Nova de Gaia in Fässern aus dem edelsten Eichenholz fort, bis er die Perfektion erreichte, wobei sich eine aromatische Pracht und eine unvergessliche Geschmackstiefe herauskristallisierten. Nach 149 Jahren der Lagerung und im Jahr der Feierlichkeiten zum 260. Jahrestag der Gründung dieser Pombalina-Gesellschaft kreuzt sich das Schicksal dieses Weins somit mit der Geschichte des emblematischsten Unternehmens des Portweins – der Real Companhia Velha – dessen Erbe sich mit der Geschichte des Portweins selbst vermischt.
