In der nationalen Weinszene gibt es keinen einvernehmlicheren Produzenten als Niepoort und die lange Geschichte beginnt im Jahr 1842 mit der Ankunft des ersten Van Der Niepoort in Portugal. Als er als Händler auf dem Portweinmarkt begann, etablierte er schnell sein Unternehmen, das sich als erfolgreich und zukunftsorientiert erweisen sollte. So wurde in der 5. Generation Dirk Niepoort geboren, ein unverzichtbarer Produzent in der Welt des Weins, der als einer der wichtigsten Persönlichkeiten gilt, die sich für den portugiesischen Wein eingesetzt haben und noch immer einsetzen. Er arbeitete mit mehreren Dutzend Produzenten zusammen, half ihnen, ihre Weine zu verbessern und ihre Weinberge zu verstehen, und bereitete sein Vermächtnis auch mit denen vor, die stets respektlose Weine herstellen. Heutzutage arbeitet Dirk Niepoort an vielen anderen Projekten in praktisch allen nationalen und einigen ausländischen Weinregionen mit.
