Der Krohn 10 Jahre wird aus einer Auswahl von Portweinen hergestellt, die aus den besten Weinbergen des Douro-Tals stammen. Die Weine reifen in Holzfässern mit einem Fassungsvermögen von etwa 630 Litern im Durchschnitt 10 Jahre. Diese Holzfässer haben ein reduziertes Volumen an Wein. Auf diese Weise ist der Kontakt des Weins mit dem Holz verhältnismäßig größer. Während der Wein im Fass lagert, verliert er allmählich die tiefe rubinrote Farbe seiner Jugend und beginnt, den bezaubernden bernsteinfarbenen Ton anzunehmen, der im Englischen als "tawny" bekannt ist. Gleichzeitig wird der Wein zunehmend weicher und samtiger, und seine Aromen gewinnen an Reichtum und Komplexität.
