Der Name Robustus ehrt den ersten Wein des Douro, produziert von Dirk Niepoort, den Robustus 1990, der nie kommerziell vertrieben wurde. Seit 2004 wird der Robustus nach den Methoden der traditionellen Weinherstellung vinifiziert. Die lange Reifung in alten Holzfässern verleiht Reife, Komplexität, mildert die Tannine und gibt dem Wein Präzision und Ausgewogenheit, ohne dabei seine ganze Kraft und aromatische Frische zu verlieren.
