Domingos Soares Franco entschied, dass es Zeit war, den Moscatel de Setúbal weiterzuentwickeln. Also begann er 5 Jahre lang Versuche, bei denen er mit Trauben aus demselben Weinberg Wein mit 4 verschiedenen Arten von Bränden herstellte: einen neutralen, einen aus der Region Cognac, einen aus der Region Armagnac und eine vierte Charge mit 50 % der letzteren. Nach 5 Jahren Verkostungen setzte sich der Armagnac durch, wegen seiner Feinheit, Frische, Komplexität und Harmonie.
