L'archipel d'Ogasawara, situé dans le Pacifique et appartenant à la préfecture de Tokyo, est composé d'environ trente îles qui bénéficient d'un climat semi-tropical et sont connues pour leur beauté environnementale, reconnue par l'UNESCO. Vers 1830, des pêcheurs d'autres parties du Pacifique ont commencé à visiter et à échanger des marchandises avec les habitants locaux. C'est à cette époque qu'ils ont découvert le rhum et ont réalisé les conditions climatiques idéales pour cultiver de la canne à sucre sur l'île. Aujourd'hui, la production de canne à sucre est l'une des principales ressources de l'île, avec la production de fruits. Le rhum d'Ogasawara a vu le jour à la fin du XIXe siècle, grâce à la distillation d'un produit à base de mélasse. Initialement connu sous le nom de "awazake" par les habitants locaux, il est considéré comme le rhum le plus ancien du Japon.
