A vineyard over 80 years old, with several gaps resulting from partial abandonment for a few years. In an area of intense exposure, with enormous schist outcrops on the surface where not a single blade of grass survives. The people at the Quinta quickly nicknamed it “Vinha do Abandonado”. For years, they tried to restore the vineyard and replant the missing vines. Until they gave up. Despite all the care, only the oldest vines were capable of surviving in such extreme conditions. In 2004, they decided to vinify it separately for the first time at the Quinta da Gaivosa winery. It immediately revealed a unique personality and character. They decided to bottle it as a tribute to the equally unique old vineyards of the Douro, which will one day disappear. Deep ruby colour
A full-bodied palate of harmony, with intensity but also delicacy, minerality and extraordinary fruit purity. The schist in the soils, the surrounding forest and the freshness of the altitude can all be felt in a pure expression of the vineyard’s nature.
Great complexity and aromatic freshness, with unusual balsamic and tar notes, liquorice and black fruit, typical of Vinha do Abandonado.
